Senior Home Care: Mentally Stimulating Activities for the Elderly
As you care for your elderly loved one, there will be things that you need to discuss with them and do with them. For example, it is crucial for you, as the family caregiver, to understand the importance of mentally stimulating activities for the elderly. If you and senior home care providers make sure your elderly loved one does these activities, it can help to keep memory loss, concentration issues, and other mental health issues at bay.
Doing Puzzles
One of the best mentally stimulating activities for the elderly is puzzles. There are so many types of puzzles that your elderly loved one can do to stimulate their brain. Some of these puzzles include:
- Crossword puzzles
- Board puzzles
- Sudoku
- Word Searches
You can talk to your elderly loved one to see which puzzles they enjoy the most. It would be great if they could have fun while doing the puzzles. You and senior home care providers could even socialize with your elderly loved one while they are doing these puzzles.
Using Sensory Bags
Did you know that sensory bags aren’t just for little kids? In fact, studies show that elderly adults that use sensory bags can keep their brain active and engage their senses, too. There are numerous recipes online that you can get to make these bags. If your elderly loved one would like to get involved, it would be good to have them create the sensory bags with you or a senior home care provider. Making the bags can be a great mentally stimulating activity, as well.
Listening to and Creating Music
Two other mentally stimulating activities that are helpful for the elderly are listening to and creating music. There are so many different kinds of music out there today. While your elderly loved one may not like it all, it would be good to get them to listen to various kinds to expand their comfort zone. In addition, even though your elderly loved one may not be a musician, it would be good for their brain to have them play an instrument. It could be something as simple as trying to play a harmonica.
Senior Home Care can Participate
These are some of the mentally stimulating activities that are important for the elderly. If you haven’t done so already, share these ideas with your elderly loved one. You or a senior home care provider could even do these activities with them. You can talk to your elderly loved one’s doctor or therapist to ask about different recommendations for mentally stimulating activities, as well.
